What is Employee Engagement?

Team Work.jpg

We talk a lot about 'engagement’ in the HR world these days, as the previous employment model of a simple exchange of money for services is replaced with people seeking ‘meaningful work’. When an Employee is engaged it will positively impact your business.

Engaged Employees aremore productive, loyal and represent the values of your business, they understand how their work contributes to the success of the business, they have ownership, accountability and they feel valued with a sense of belonging. Engagement is also directly linked to the amount of 'discretionary effort' an Employee puts in, or going the extra mile as it is commonly known.

How do you increase Employee engagement?

There is no ‘one size fits all’ solution to Employee engagement, initiatives that work for one Employee can isolate and disengage others, for example the Kiwi Business Friday night drinks don’t work or appeal to everyone. How about trying the following?

  • Sharing your strategy, tell the story – have collaborative discussions

  • Provide a flexible working environment

  • Offer career development opportunities

  • Recognition and rewards that are unique

  • Wellness initiatives to encourage team spirit

  • Provide clear communication and transparency – consider a workplace comms platform

The groundwork for engagement begins during the recruitment and induction period which is why you’ll hear us place the importance of induction and on-boarding material!
