About McKinlay Surveyors:
McKinlay Surveyors is a respected, New Plymouth based surveying practice working across the wider Taranaki region. The team is in a strong growth phase, shifting from a traditional partnership model into an integrated surveyor-planner structure. The work is varied, the standards are high, and the directors are committed to building a team that enjoys the work as much as the outcomes.
About the role:
You’ll manage client and landowner engagement, undertake pre-planning, complete field survey, carry out post field calculations, and prepare and lodge Land Transfer plans. The work spans cadastral, civil, topographical, and site-set out projects, with plenty of autonomy. You will also:
Lead smaller projects end to end, including methodology, compliance, and QA
Provide technical guidance to graduates
Support planning interfaces and subdivision workflows
Prepare Landonline datasets and resolve spatial queries
Keep work moving even when conditions shift, prioritising, troubleshooting, and making sound decisions on site
Contribute to continuous improvement as the practice evolves
The ideal Licensed Cadastral Surveyor:
Holds a current New Zealand Cadastral Licence with 5+ years’ experience
Comfortable and competent with GNSS, robotic total stations (Trimble preferred but not essential), 12D, AutoCAD, and high computer literacy
Confident working with Cadastral Survey Rules 2021, including old rural boundaries, water boundaries and limited-as-to-parcels definition
Makes sound decisions on-site, solves problems independently, and knows when to ask for support
Has a positive attitude to the profession, turns up prepared, and values doing the job well over clock-watching
Able to work solo out in the field but fits well into a small, pragmatic office team
Good sense of humour and open communication style
Full NZ driver licence required
