Employment Lawyer – Associate

Who are we

We're ABMM. A tight-knit team dedicated to providing remarkable legal services that deliver outstanding outcomes for our clients. We specalise in commercial, property and employment law.

Over three decades, we have built an enviable reputation for providing practical, timely, and valuable legal advice when it matters most. Our clients include local and central government, Taranaki businesses large and small, and individuals.

We're curious, professional and helpful - but what sets us apart from other firms is our commitment to being weasel-free - you'll find out what this means later... (FYI, it doesn't involve real weasels).

We're on the lookout for an associate employment lawyer to join our employment team. This role is being created because the team is experiencing significant growth.

Our employment team provides practical and strategic legal advice to employers and employees. Our approach is based on understanding our clients' needs and, when working with employers, working as an extension of their team to deliver outstanding results.

The Role

You will work closely with both of our employment & disputes partners and solicitors across a wide range of clients throughout Taranaki. We work with many of Taranaki's largest employers, including local authorities, employers in the manufacturing, energy, and healthcare sectors, and a broad range of SMEs and individuals.

We're the only full-service employment law team in Taranaki. This means you will have opportunities to work on Health and Safety and Immigration matters. We work collaboratively as a firm, which means you will also have opportunities to work on civil litigation matters with our commercial and property partners from time to time.

Your skills and experience

  • You must have strong written and oral communication skills and experience providing plain language employment law advice to a range of clients

  • Your employment law experience will include work on a range of matters such as raising and responding to personal grievances, organisational change and restructuring, disciplinary processes, performance management and medical incapacity.

  • You have experience providing general employment law compliance advice including reviewing employment agreements and policies.

  • You have experience representing clients in without prejudice negotiations, mediation, and collective bargaining.

  • Any experience in the Employment Relations Authority and Employment Court is a plus.

What we're looking for

  • Someone who wants to mentor and support junior employment lawyers.

  • Strong technical employment law experience and the ability to work independently, show initiative and take on responsibility as you develop into a leader in employment law at ABMM.

  • An ability to build strong and trusted relationships as well as develop new business and contribute to the ongoing growth of our employment practice.

  • Demonstrates a strong track record of delivery results, taking ownership and following through on commitments.

Joining the ABMM Team

We're helpful, professional, curious and proudly weasel-free. Weasel free means we make and meet commitments, we're upfront and give clear advice without unnecessary legal jargon or "Weasel Words" (like, "it depends"). It's an ethos we carry through into everything we do.

We love seeing our people thrive and will support your professional development as well as provide the guidance, support and tools to achieve your goals.

Alongside a competitive salary and health insurance, you'll have the chance to be part of our growth journey and work closely on meaningful business changes that genuinely improve client outcomes. You'll be encouraged to bring fresh ideas to the table and will have the opportunity to lead, or be actively involved in, business improvement projects. Join us at this exciting time and take the opportunity to make a difference for the firm and our clients.
