Senior Systems Engineer – Auckland

We’re looking for a hands‑on Senior Systems Engineer who enjoys variety, ownership, and getting things done properly.

This role suits someone who is comfortable working in a small Managed Service Provider, where you’ll be involved across projects, escalations, and day‑to‑day engineering work. If you value long‑term stability, clear ownership, and being trusted to get on with the job without layers of hierarchy, you’ll fit well here.

This is not a pure architecture or management role. It’s a senior, practical engineering position for someone who enjoys staying close to the technology.

About CNS

CNS has been operating for many years and supports a diverse client base across multiple industries, with mature systems, security standards, and long‑term customer relationships.

We’re a small, capable team that values reliability, accountability, and practical problem‑solving. Our focus is on doing the fundamentals well, supporting our clients consistently, and building long‑term relationships.

This role is for you if you:

  • Enjoy being hands‑on across projects and support work

  • Are comfortable wearing multiple hats in a small MSP environment

  • Don’t mind jumping between client projects, escalations, and the occasional L2/L3 ticket

  • Prefer long‑term stability and ownership over corporate titles

  • Take pride in doing solid, reliable work, even when it’s not glamorous

What you’ll be doing

  • Deliver a mix of client projects, including cloud migrations, infrastructure upgrades, security improvements, and network changes

  • Act as a senior escalation point for complex issues and Priority 1 incidents

  • Provide strong hands‑on engineering support across Windows Server, Microsoft 365, Azure, networking, and backups

  • Assist with day‑to‑day support tickets when required to help maintain service levels and team balance

  • Scope and deliver chargeable project work in a practical, commercially sensible way

  • Maintain clear documentation and contribute to improving systems and processes

  • Participate in an after‑hours / on‑call roster for critical incidents

What we’re looking for

  • 5+ years’ experience in a hands‑on systems or infrastructure role, ideally within a Managed Service Provider (MSP) or IT services environment

  • Strong, practical experience with:

    • Windows Server (AD, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy)

    • Microsoft 365 and Azure

    • Virtualisation (VMware and/or Hyper‑V)

    • Networking (firewalls, switches, VPNs)

    • Backup, disaster recovery, and security best practices

  • Comfortable working across projects, escalations, and day‑to‑day engineering work, rather than a narrowly defined role

  • Able to work independently, manage competing priorities, and take ownership of issues end‑to‑end

  • Calm, methodical, and reliable when handling escalations or Priority 1 incidents

  • Willing to assist with support tickets when required to help keep service levels and team balance on track

We value practical MSP experience, reliability, and long‑term fit more than titles or theoretical design experience. This role suits someone who enjoys being hands‑on and contributing consistently in a small MSP environment.

Nice to have (but not essential)

  • Microsoft certifications (e.g. AZ‑104, MS‑102, SC‑300)

  • Sophos firewall or endpoint experience

  • PowerShell scripting or automation exposure

  • Experience working in ISO / ITIL‑aligned environments

Why work with us

  • A stable, long‑term role in a small, experienced MSP

  • Real ownership and trust, no unnecessary layers

  • Variety across projects, support, and client environments

  • A team that values reliability, accountability, and doing the job properly
