Professional subscriptions and support towards Full Membership of NZPI
Exposure to the whole land development process, working alongside surveyors and engineering professionals

About McKinlay Surveyors
With roots in Taranaki dating back to 1881, McKinlay Surveyors is Taranaki’s longest established surveying practice, with a reputation built over generations. Our work spans the wider region and our reputation has been built on quality work, sound technical advice and strong relationships.
We are now in an exciting growth phase. The practice is evolving, the work is varied, the standards are high, and we want to build a team that enjoys the work as much as the outcomes.
About the role
You will support clients through the resource consent process for subdivision and land development projects, while building practical experience across the full consenting process. You will work closely with experienced planners, surveyors and other professionals, with real project responsibility and plenty of support as you develop.
Your responsibilities will include:
Preparing resource consent applications and Assessments of Environmental Effects (AEEs) for subdivision, land use and minor earthworks projects
Undertaking planning and property research and interpreting district and regional planning requirements
Assessing proposals to identify activity status, relevant planning rules and where specialist input may be required
Attending site visits and working with surveyors on scheme plans
Assisting with council requests for further information and reviewing consent conditions
Liaising with clients, councils, consultants, affected parties and, where relevant, mana whenua and iwi authorities
Helping track applications through the consenting process, from initial application through to approval and certification
Keeping up to date with changes in planning legislation and practice
This isn't a role where you will spend your first year sitting on the sidelines. You will be given real work and real responsibility, backed by experienced people who want to help you develop and grow.
About you
You will ideally bring:
A degree in Planning, Resource Management, Environmental Management, Geography or a related field
Strong written communication skills and an ability to turn information into a clear, logical assessment
Great attention to detail and an interest in interpreting planning rules and requirements
Good organisation and the ability to juggle multiple projects
Confidence communicating with different people, or the willingness to develop it
A curious, practical approach and genuine willingness to learn
A collaborative attitude, confidence to ask questions and commitment to ongoing learning
A full New Zealand driver licence
Any previous exposure to resource consenting, the RMA, GIS, council e-plans or planning systems would be an advantage, but isn't essential
If you are looking for a graduate opportunity where you can build genuine planning experience, learn from an experienced team and establish your career here in Taranaki, we would love to hear from you.
